Most published work on selank originates from a small number of research groups in the Russian Federation. A large share of that record appears in Russian-language journals, which limits access for readers who rely on English-indexed databases. Independent replication by laboratories outside the original research network is sparse in publicly available sources. This concentration of origin and language is a frequently noted feature when the compound is summarized in broader reviews of synthetic peptides.
Reported pharmacological effects center on reduced anxiety-like behavior in animal models and on measures of memory and learning. Proposed contributing mechanisms include modulation of GABAergic signaling, shifts in monoamine turnover, and changes in the activity of enzymes that degrade neuropeptides. Effects on the expression of genes linked to neuroplasticity have also been described. No single molecular target is widely accepted, and whether the behavioral findings arise from one pathway or several remains an open question.
Naming for this compound is not fully standardised in English sources. The spelling Selanc appears in some transliterations, and catalogue entries may instead list the peptide sequence itself as the identifier. Reference material sometimes groups it with other short synthetic peptides studied for behavioural effects, which can create confusion when citations are compared. Distinguishing the exact sequence from related tuftsin analogues is therefore a practical first step when reviewing any dataset or specification sheet.
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro, frequently abbreviated as TKPRPGP. It was designed as a structural analogue of tuftsin, a naturally occurring tetrapeptide released by enzymatic cleavage of the immunoglobulin heavy chain. The two additional proline residues at the C-terminal end extend the parent chain and change how the molecule behaves in solution. The free peptide has a calculated molecular mass of approximately 751.9 g/mol and is generally supplied as a lyophilised white to off-white powder.
Development work on the compound began in the 1980s and 1990s at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow, within the same research programme that produced the peptide Semax. Early investigators sought a tuftsin derivative with improved resistance to enzymatic breakdown and with activity in the central nervous system after peripheral administration. Most of the primary literature from this period was published in Russian, a factor that still shapes how easily the findings can be checked by outside groups.

Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography is the standard technique for estimating peptide purity. The result is a peak-area percentage, which describes how much of the detected material elutes as the main peak in one run. Mass spectrometry confirms the molecular mass and can reveal truncated, adducted, or otherwise modified species. Amino acid analysis or tandem mass spectrometry can address sequence fidelity when identity is in doubt. None of these measurements, taken alone, establishes that a sample is fit for any specific purpose.
Lyophilized selank is normally supplied as a dry powder and is considered stable for extended periods when kept cold and dry. Moisture uptake is the main practical threat, because absorbed water promotes both hydrolysis and aggregation in the solid state. Vials are usually warmed to room temperature before opening so that condensation does not form on the powder. Supplier documentation commonly specifies -20 °C for routine storage, with -80 °C used for material intended to be archived for years.
Outside its country of origin the compound is generally handled as a research chemical rather than an approved medicine. No regulatory approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration or the European Medicines Agency has been granted for human use. Identity and purity are normally checked by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, with mass spectrometry used to confirm the molecular mass. Lyophilised material is stored cold and desiccated, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles are avoided.
Published work on this peptide almost always uses intranasal delivery, with drops or a spray applied to the nasal mucosa. Some animal experiments have used subcutaneous or intraperitoneal injection, and a smaller number have compared routes directly. Oral administration is not a focus of the literature, because short peptides of this size are broken down by digestive enzymes and cross intestinal barriers poorly. How much of an intranasal dose reaches the bloodstream intact in humans remains an open question.
Animal studies have examined behaviour in tests of anxiety, memory retention and stress response, and several report changes in neurotrophic or neurotransmitter-related markers. The human evidence base is much smaller, consisting mainly of short trials conducted in Russia with limited reporting in English-language journals. Sample sizes are modest and outcome measures vary between studies, so the findings are best described as preliminary. Independent replication under modern trial standards has not been widely reported.
Other minor active components of Penicillium include penicillin O, penicillin U1, and penicillin U6. Other named constituents of natural Penicillium, such as penicillin A, were subsequently found not to have antibiotic activity and are not chemically related to antibiotic penicillins. The precise constitution of the penicillin extracted depends on the species of Penicillium mould used and on the nutrient media used to culture the mould. Fleming's original strain of Penicillium rubens produces principally penicillin F, named after Fleming. But penicillin F is unstable, difficult to isolate, and produced by the mould in small quantities. The principal commercial strain of Penicillium chrysogenum (the Peoria strain) produces penicillin G as the principal component when corn steep liquor is used as the culture medium. When phenoxyethanol or phenoxyacetic acid are added to the culture medium, the mould produces penicillin V as the main penicillin instead. 6-Aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) is a compound derived from penicillin G. 6-APA contains the beta-lactam core of penicillin G, but with the side chains stripped off; 6-APA is a useful precursor for manufacturing other penicillins. There are many semi-synthetic penicillins derived from 6-APA and these are in three groups: antistaphylococcal penicillins, broad-spectrum penicillins, and antipseudomonal penicillins. The semi-synthetic penicillins are all referred to as penicillins because they are all derived ultimately from penicillin G.
For example, the Archbishop of Reggio Calabria, Carmelo Pujia, an interventionist on the eve of World War, had a prayer composed praising the glory of the homeland and the Italian flag. Under the Fascist regime, concentration camps were built in Calabria and used to imprison foreigners whose presence was considered undesirable, such as Chinese immigrants and foreign (though not Italian) Jews together with members of the Romani minority, whose nomadic lifestyle was viewed as anti-social. The camps operated from 1938 to 1943. They were harsh, butt not death camps, (the majority of those imprisoned survived).
The ice-nine-like phenomenon is referrable to the tin pest process, occurring when a β-form white tin due to low temperature decomposes into an α-form grey tin, which leads to turning the solid sample into powder. The grey tin, while being a result of decomposition, is also a catalyst for even quicker tin pest appear, which eventually leads the entire construction made of tin to decompose. Ice-nine has been used as a model to explain the infective mechanism of mis-folded proteins called prions which are thought to catalyze the mis-folding of the corresponding normal protein leading to a variety of spongiform encephalopathies such as kuru, scrapie and Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease.
== Research == One drug in test seemed to prevent the type of muscle loss that occurs in immobile, bedridden patients. Testing on mice showed that it blocked the activity of a protein present in the muscle that is involved in muscle atrophy. However, the drug's long-term effect on the heart precludes its routine use in humans, and other drugs are being sought.
== Measuring the freeze point == Once antifreeze has been mixed with water and put into use, it periodically needs to be maintained. If engine coolant leaks, boils, or if the cooling system needs to be drained and refilled, the antifreeze's freeze protection will need to be considered. In other cases a vehicle may need to be operated in a colder environment, requiring more antifreeze and less water. Three methods are commonly employed to determine the freeze point of the solution by measuring the concentration:

MRI offers the greatest image resolution and can provide diagnostic information on presence of soft tissue infection or bone infection. Like ultrasound, MRI does not expose patients to radiation, however it is the slowest and most difficult to implement of all of these imaging methods. Laboratory studies: Serum prealbumin levels may be useful in evaluating nutrition status in patients with chronic wounds or at risk for developing chronic wounds. Elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) can confirm presence of an infection but alone are not diagnostic. Routine bloodwork such as a basic metabolic panel (BMP) or complete blood count (CBC) are not typically required but may be useful in select circumstances. Ankle-brachial index/toe-brachial index (ABI/TBI): These tests can be used to assess blood supply to the lower extremities and their results may affect management of lower extremity wounds such as venous/arterial ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, or pressure ulcers.
=== Regulatory status === This medication first reached market in 1973. It is approved in 21 countries worldwide, which does not include its home country of Denmark. It was taken off the approved list in India in 2014, citing a lack of required information such as mandatory clinical trial results in its 1998 approval decision. It is approved in China.
== Life == Sun Yaoting was born in a village near Tianjin, about 60 miles southeast of Beijing. Born into poverty, his father was a jianbing peddler. When he was young, his family's home was burned down and their fields were stolen by a landlord in their village. Inspired by an older eunuch from his village who had become rich, coupled with the family's hope that they would gain Imperial influence and get revenge on the landlord, the family decided to emasculate Sun. In 1911, at the age of eight, Sun was emasculated by his father at home on their bed with a single razor cut, without the use of anesthesia. A piece of oil-soaked paper was used as a bandage, while a goose quill was inserted in Sun's urethra to prevent it from getting blocked as the wound healed. Sun remained unconscious for three days and could barely move for two months. However, the emperor he had hoped to serve, Puyi, had abdicated several weeks before his recovery during the Xinhai Revolution. Nonetheless, Sun went to Beijing at age 14. His rank initially was so low that he was not even given a name, and worked as a servant to another, higher ranking eunuch. He then rose through the ranks, becoming a palace eunuch serving under one of the emperor’s uncles, eventually becoming an attendant to the Qing empress. Corruption amongs the eunuchs working in the Forbidden City was rampant, as they constantly stole treasures and sold it on the black market.
=== Raman spectroscopy === Raman spectroscopy is a spectroscopic technique that provides non-destructive analysis capable of identifying components within mixtures with chemical specificity without complex sample preparation. Raman spectroscopy relies on photon scattering following visible light radiation, where the shift in photon energies corresponds to information about the system's vibrational modes and their frequencies. Upon obtaining vibrational modenfrequencies, qualitative classifications about the system can be both made and reinforced. Raman spectroscopy works well in parallel with microfluidic devices for many qualitative biological applications. For some applications, Raman spectroscopy is preferred over other detection methods such as infrared (IR) spectroscopy as water has a strong interference signal with IR but not with Raman. Likewise, methods such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS), or gas chromatography (GC) are also not ideal as these methods require larger sample sizes. Since microfluidics enables experiments with small volumes (including analysis of single cells or few cells), Raman is a leading microfluidic detection method. Specifically, Raman integration with microfluidic devices has strong applications in systems where lipid identification is necessary, common in biofuel research. For example, a lipid fluorescent assay is not selective enough and thus cannot identify molecular differences the way Raman can through molecular vibrations.

== Low-cost laboratory automation == A large obstacle to the implementation of automation in laboratories has been its high cost. Many laboratory instruments are very expensive. This is justifiable in many cases, as such equipment can perform very specific tasks employing cutting-edge technology. However, there are devices employed in the laboratory that are not highly technological but still are very expensive. This is the case of many automated devices, which perform tasks that could easily be done by simple and low-cost devices like simple robotic arms, universal (open-source) electronic modules, Lego Mindstorms, or 3D printers. So far, using such low-cost devices together with laboratory equipment was considered to be difficult. However, it has been demonstrated that such low-cost devices can substitute for the standard machines used in laboratory without problems. It can be anticipated that more laboratories will take advantage of this as low-cost automation is very attractive for laboratories. A technology that enables the integration of any machine regardless of their brand is scripting, more specifically, scripting involving the control of mouse clicks and keyboard entries, like AutoIt. By timing clicks and keyboard inputs, different software interfaces controlling different devices can be perfectly synchronized.
==== Cough ==== Codeine was once viewed as the "gold standard" in cough suppressants, but this position has since been questioned. Some recent placebo-controlled trials have found that it may be no better than a placebo for some causes including acute cough in children. As a consequence, it is not recommended for children. Additionally, there is no evidence that hydrocodone is useful in children. Similarly, a 2012 Dutch guideline regarding the treatment of acute cough does not recommend its use. Low dose morphine may help chronic cough but its use is limited by side effects.
== Etymology == The historical origin of the term is unclear as the definition of the word has changed throughout the past few decades. The term first appeared in a 1984 publication that described the organization of an endothelium-like membrane on the surface of a long-implanted, synthetic ophthalmic prosthesis. The first modern use of the term as recognized today was in 1985 by the researcher, physiologist and bioengineer Yuan-Cheng Fung of the Engineering Research Center. He proposed the joining of the terms tissue (in reference to the fundamental relationship between cells and organs) and engineering (in reference to the field of modification of said tissues). The term was officially adopted in 1987.

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro, designed as a metabolically stabilized analogue of the endogenous tetrapeptide tuftsin. It has been studied mainly against anxiety-related and cognitive endpoints rather than as an approved medicine in most jurisdictions.
Tuftsin contains four residues, while selank carries an additional Pro-Gly-Pro segment at the carboxyl end. That extension is intended to reduce enzymatic cleavage. Comparative pharmacokinetic data in humans remain limited.
No single receptor target is widely accepted as the definitive mediator of the reported effects. Proposed contributors include GABAergic modulation, shifts in monoamine turnover, and altered neuropeptide degradation. The mechanism is treated in the literature as unresolved.
The sequence is Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro, commonly written as TKPRPGP. It shares the first four residues with tuftsin and carries three prolines in the chain. The proline-rich tail is the main structural feature that separates it from the parent tetrapeptide.
